One of the most obvious and prominent use cases of Hyperledger is the supply chain. Pharmaceuticals, for example, can use Hyperledger to create a blockchain network that can take full control of the supply chain.

Every drug that leaves the manufacturer is registered to the supply chain according to set standards, and the information is shared among the stakeholders and the end-users so that they can track its every move. This of course removes counterfeit drugs from the chain.

IBM is one of the first technology companies that are building several new blockchain enterprise systems. They are using Hyperledger Fabric for the purpose.

For now, they have partnered with Sichuan Hejia, a Chinese conglomerate for building blockchain-based supply chain platforms. By doing so, different sized retailers in China will be able to get access to a proper credit system rather than relying on the less-established credit evaluation system full of risk.

By using the DLT network, they will be able to get paid faster without the need to wait two or three months to get paid.

The Hyperledger blockchain will be able to encrypt trading records and also track the drugs. It will also provide the transparency that is required to ensure trust among the users. 

Trade Finance

Trade Finance is another sector that will be truly impacted by the Hyperledger ecosystem. There are obviously many benefits of using DLT in trade finance. One of the biggest advantages is the reduced processing time.

IBM is also at the forefront of utilizing Hyperledger for creating a trade financing blockchain-based platform.

IBM has partnered with Mizuho Bank and Japan’s Mizuho Financial Group. They are focusing on creating a platform that will empower the different financial entities and remove intermediaries whenever necessary. The end result would mean improved transparency, less deal processing time, and document digitization.

They plan to use Hyperledger Fabric so that all the trade transactions can be done on it. IBM’s official press release also confirms that the use of DLT will improve transaction time and reduce operating costs.

Education and Training

By far, one of the fascinating use cases of Hyperledger is education and training. Education has not changed much in the last few decades. Its integration with technology acted as a catalyst where now educational institutes are now more eager to make changes to their system.

Also, with pandemic running around the world, it is now the time where the students now have to take classes online.

Apart from improving the different facets of the education system like providing digitized certificates that are globally accessible and verifiable, there are also other use-cases of Hyperledger.

In 2018, the implementation was done to facilitate the education of students. IBM was up to the challenge here as well as partnered with the National University of Singapore. Both of them are working on creating a financial technology module that will directly help students in the education sector. 

The students will now be able to learn about more latest technologies including distributed ledger technologies and blockchain fundamentals. The NUS facility will be responsible for developing the curriculum.

Another aspect where Hyperledger can be used is to create a platform to provide training. Companies and organizations can utilize the platform to digitally distribute training videos and certificates.

Streamlined Supply Chain

The supply chain is at the core of the global industry. Without a proper supply chain, companies will struggle to meet demands and hence suffer revenue loss.

The eCommerce is also growing rapidly which in turn demanding improved efficiency from the supply chain itself. The eCommerce industry is growing at a rapid pace where 246.15% increase is seen in sales worldwide.

To improve the overall performance of the supply chain, it is important to ensure real-time tracking and transparency to the supply chain.

IBM and Walmart partnered together to trace food. By tracing food, they want to reduce the number of food-borne diseases and also give the companies and farmers information so that they can act quickly in case of emergency or dispute. 

IBM used Hyperledger Fabric to create the platform which in turn is intended to be used by the different food vendors across the world. They are currently in the testing phase where they managed to track 5 food items from its origin to 25 suppliers across the world.

The initial success means that more and more retailers want to collaborate on it including the likes of Kroger, McLane Company, Dole, and so on.

Smart Energy Management

Energy powers everything in our lives. Without it, we will never have advanced as we have now. However, the current energy market is limited in many ways. Whenever a cyclone hits an area, it is bound to lose electricity due to uprooted trees. The responsibility to resolve this is by the electricity provider of that area.

Even though they resolve the issue, but they take their own time to solve this. The centralized approach slows the whole restoration process and brings down the repair process.

Not to mention, energy is always centralized which means that not everyone can produce their own energy or have their own grid. And, even when they do so, they do not have proper access to the solutions to connect to the central grid to share their energy with others. 

The solution to all of these is smart energy management. IBM in May 2017 understood the problem and decided to create a smart energy management project with the Hyperledger blockchain platform.

IBM is collaborating with Vandebron, Sonnen, and TenneT to create a distributed database that will help manage electricity gird in Germany and the Netherlands.

The network will be able to address the deficiencies of a certain area and help provide them with much-needed energy. They will also help fill the other energy sources including batteries, eclectic cars, and improve the overall energy development and consumption process of energy.

This falls under the Hyperledger Blockchain use cases.

ChainYard and IBM Reducing Onboarding Process

IBM and ChainYard are working to create a new platform where they aim to streamline the B2B supplier’s onboarding process while keeping risk low. The new platform will decrease the onboarding process from two months to just three days.

Honeywell Aerospace Creates an Online Marketplace for Parts

  • Industry: Manufacturing

Another interesting case study is by the Honeywell Aerospace as they want to create an eCommerce platform for airplane parts. The eCommerce platform will reduce the time required to acquire new parts which generally takes place months. It also includes intermediates which mean spending more money on airplane companies. Without no doubt, there are plenty of other things that are improving including better transparency, availability, and shipment.

Change Healthcare is Using Hyperledger Fabric to Improve the Claims Process

Change Healthcare wants to use Hyperledger to improve the claims process and hence improve the transparency related to it. Their approach is to create a better healthcare system by providing healthcare networks a way to improve healthcare transactions and claims.

The results were also astounding as Hyperledger Fabric shows great capacity when it comes to handling transactions. It managed to do 50 million transactions per day in a test in 2018 which means 550 transactions a second.

BTP Simplifying Enterprise Blockchain Adoption

Here, the company Blockchain Technology Partners(BTP) is trying to ensure that the blockchain networks can sustain over a long time, rather than die off once installed or made operational. That’s why they used Hyperledger Sawtooth for the network and Kubernetes for the operational layer.

The project did fairly by late 2018 and is already available in the AWS marketplace. Recently it also supports DAML smart contract language to provide value to the users.

British Columbia Cuts Red Tape With the Use of Hyperledger Indy

Canada, Ontario, and British Columbia created Verifiable Organizations Network(VON) which is sponsoring the project. The project aims to improve the trust among small to medium scale business with government by providing an open software stack. The project found good support and success as it managed to include 529000 companies digital IDs and help server 1.4 million credentials.

Walmart Improving Transparency in Food Supply

One of the famous use-cases of Hyperledger is the food supply. Walmart is using Hyperledger Fabric to improve transparency in the food supply chain.

Their challenge was to reduce the food-borne diseases and one of the best ways to do so is to offer better traceability to the food supply chain. This will help companies so that they can act faster and also protect the farmer’s livelihoods as they will get notified if something goes wrong.

The approach is to use Hyperleder Fabric, a permissioned distributed ledger technology. Walmart then partnered with IBM to create a platform that will trace food across continents. The results were also promising as they manage to trace 25 products origin as they went through 5 different suppliers — all through the Hyperledger Fabric system.

Circulor Solve Conflicts In the Mining Industry by Providing Traceability

They want to improve their code of ethics by working together. To do so, they are going to build the RETALOR Associations Blockchain where they will share information about members and improve engagement.

Sony Global Education Creating Next-Generation Credentials Platform Using Fabric

  • Industry: Government, Education

Sony Global Education is working to create its next-generation credentials platform with the consortium of organizations and government agencies.

Their approach is to create a collaborator’s consortium and then create a blockchain solution prototype. Once done, they will test the prototype with 250,000 participants. If everything works great, they will release the credentials platform to the world.

One thing that you should also notice is how often Hyperledger Fabric is used for real-world implementation. It is no doubt that Fabric is one of the most important frameworks that the Hyperledger has to offer.

But, it doesn’t mean that there are fewer use-cases or implementation of other projects. The reason being is that other Hyperledger projects offer specific usage which makes them used less often.
